The awards ceremony took place on November 7th, at the Warsaw University of Technology in Warsaw, Poland, in the presence of the architects competing for the Grand Prizes, the members of the international panel of judges and the companies making up the BigMat Group. The selected 13 finalists were chosen from the initial selection of 90 participating teams of architects disclosed last July.

Out of a list of almost 700 projects from 7 European countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Slovakia, Portugal and Spain), the panel of judges chaired by Jesús Aparicio and comprising Oana Bogdan (Belgium), Martin Jančok (Czech Republic + Slovakia), Anne Lacaton (France), Francesca Torzo (Italy), José Neves (Portugal), María Langarita (Spain), and award secretary Jesús Donaire, decided to give the BigMat International Proximity Architecture Award’25 to Birgit’s home in Calvim, Mallorca, by Spanish architects Ted’A arquitectes, and the BigMat International Architecture Award’25 to TIC Terminal Intermodal de Campanhã in Campanhã, by Portuguese architecture studio brandão costa arquitectos.

Birgit’s home by Ted’A arquitectes is “on an 800 m2 allotment — roughly 20 x 40 m, facing east-west — looking onto the sea from an imposing cliff. The sea dominates the clear views to the west. the house wants to look at the sea while on the other, it must shield itself from the neighbour’s view. The project resolves both issues in a single gesture: two deep walls — the only vertical structural components — are set parallel to the adjacent properties, framing the sea views while providing privacy. The roof leaps from one wall to the other, without any intermediate supports, creating a porch house. The ancient dolmen is reproposed, once again. […]. The size of the bricks defines the dimensions of the house. Their position links the three layers, left exposed in order to texturize the two walls and flaunt their structural nature. […] The house is a domestic refuge. A cabin, a cave, where one takes shelter and is protected from inclement weather and neighbouring gazes. […]”

TIC Terminal Intermodal de Campanhã in Campanhã, by brandão costa arquitectos is “a layout with simply two lines on the floor, at the edge of the buildable area, next to the railway line. These alignments establish a clear closure for the longitudinal development of the structure and tackle the existing morphological anachrony. […]. The proposal attempts to simplify the programme; it breaks it in a regulated and sequential plot, in Portico, summarized in a perceptible matrix in the structure […]. All areas of mechanical movement and parking of vehicles are established at the lower level of the territory: a large covered space, opened to the outside at both ends. […]. At the level above, the small support programmes are distributed in a modular sequence, levelled with the Natural Park, which hides the physical presence of the complex […]. The sustainability of the construction work resides only and simply in the rational use of its building components, reduced to their simple geometry and strict functional utility. […]”
